This one cuts both ways and it is worth stating plainly. All-wheel drive is standard on the XC90 and optional on the MDX, so at base trim the Volvo gives you AWD and the Acura does not.
What the MDX offers in exchange, when you do specify SH-AWD, is torque vectoring — overdriving the outside rear wheel through a corner to help rotate the vehicle. The XC90 all-wheel-drive system distributes torque but does not do that. If all-wheel drive is a must-have, price an SH-AWD MDX rather than the base car before you compare.

The XC90 interior is one of the best in the segment for design and material honesty, and standard all-wheel drive means the base car is more capable in bad weather than a base MDX.
Volvo offers XC90 plug-in hybrid variants with meaningful electric range. The MDX has no equivalent. For a household with a home charger and a short commute, that changes the fuel math entirely.
