Acura MDX Generations

A LESSON IN HISTORY & EVOLUTION

Since its debut in 2001, the Acura MDX has been one of the most consistently popular three-row luxury SUVs in North America — blending premium comfort, advanced technology, and Honda-engineered reliability. With each of the Acura MDX generations — the model has continuously evolved from a pioneering unibody crossover into a refined, performance‑capable flagship for Acura’s SUV lineup.

While every generation of the MDX has offered a balance of luxury and practicality, Acura has occasionally introduced special variants that push its capabilities and exclusivity even further. The MDX Sport Hybrid, available from 2017–2020 during the third of the Acura MDX generations, paired a 3.0‑liter V6 with a three‑motor SH‑AWD hybrid system and a 7‑speed dual‑clutch transmission. This setup delivered 321 horsepower, improved fuel efficiency, and a more responsive driving experience — especially in its Advance Package configuration, which added top‑tier comfort and technology features.

In 2020, Acura also released the MDX PMC Edition, a 300‑unit, hand‑built run assembled alongside the NSX supercar at Acura’s Performance Manufacturing Center in Ohio. Finished in striking Valencia Red Pearl and featuring unique interior and trim details, the PMC Edition represented the pinnacle of craftsmanship and exclusivity in the third‑generation MDX lineup, further distinguishing it within the history of Acura MDX generations.

Whether you’re a prospective buyer, an automotive enthusiast, or a dealership customer comparing model years, understanding the differences between the Acura MDX generations is key to finding the right fit. Below, we break down each generation with quick‑reference spec tables and concise overviews, so you can see exactly how the MDX has grown in size, power, efficiency, and features over the years.

💡 Towing Tip: In earlier Acura MDX generations, the standard maximum towing capacity was 3,500 lbs.
However, Acura rated the MDX for up to 4,500 lbs only when towing a boat on a boat trailer.
This higher limit was possible because boat trailers are typically more aerodynamic and create less drag than enclosed or utility trailers.
To achieve the higher rating, the MDX needed the factory towing package and the trailer had to meet Acura’s safety requirements (including trailer brakes where applicable).

HISTORY OF THE 1ST ACURA MDX GENERATION (2001–2006)

The first-generation Acura MDX, produced from 2001 to 2006, marked a pivotal moment for Acura and the luxury SUV segment. Before its debut, Acura’s SUV lineup consisted of the SLX — a rebadged Isuzu Trooper — which, while capable, lacked the refinement and brand identity Acura sought. The MDX was conceived as a clean-sheet design to replace the SLX and to meet growing demand for premium SUVs that combined car-like handling, three-row seating, and upscale amenities.

Acura’s design team in California, led by Catalin Matei, created the MDX as the first three-row luxury SUV built on a unibody platform rather than a traditional truck frame. This approach delivered a smoother ride, better handling, and improved fuel efficiency compared to body-on-frame rivals.

AWARDS & REVIEWS OF THE 1ST GENERATION ACURA MDX

The MDX was an immediate critical success. It earned the 2001 North American Truck of the Year and 2001 Motor Trend SUV of the Year awards, praised for its blend of performance, comfort, and versatility. Reviewers highlighted its spacious, well-appointed interior, refined road manners, and advanced features — including an available navigation system, rare in SUVs at the time.

WHERE THE 1ST GENERATION ACURA MDX WAS BUILT

The first-generation Acura MDX was assembled at Honda of Canada Manufacturing in Alliston, Ontario. This Canadian facility, known for its high build quality and precision manufacturing standards, produced every MDX sold in North America during the 2001–2006 model years.

ANALYZING THE 2001–2006 ACURA MDX SPECS

The 2001–2006 Acura MDX delivered a driving experience that stood out in its era for blending SUV versatility with car‑like refinement. Built on a unibody platform with fully independent suspension, it offered a smoother, more composed ride than many body‑on‑frame competitors, while still providing confident traction through Acura’s VTM‑4 all‑wheel‑drive system. Steering was light yet precise, making the MDX easy to maneuver in city traffic and stable at highway speeds.

The 3.5‑liter V6 provided responsive acceleration for daily driving and confident passing power, aided by a well‑tuned 5‑speed automatic. Road and wind noise were impressively subdued for the time, and the suspension soaked up bumps without feeling overly soft.

Overall, the first‑gen MDX struck a balance between comfort, capability, and handling that appealed to families and drivers seeking a premium SUV without sacrificing driving enjoyment.

EVOLUTION FROM 1ST TO 2ND ACURA MDX GENERATION (2007–2013)

The second-generation Acura MDX, produced from 2007 to 2013, represented a major leap forward in performance, technology, and design. Building on the success of the first generation, Acura set out to create a more dynamic and premium three-row SUV that could rival European competitors while maintaining the MDX’s reputation for comfort and versatility.

A key engineering milestone for this generation was the debut of Acura’s Super Handling All-Wheel Drive (SH‑AWD) system, which actively distributed torque between the front and rear axles and between the left and right rear wheels to enhance cornering precision and stability. The styling adopted a bolder, more athletic stance, while the chassis and suspension were tuned for sharper handling without sacrificing ride quality.

AWARDS & REVIEWS OF THE 2ND GENERATION ACURA MDX

The 2nd Gen MDX earned widespread praise from automotive journalists for its engaging driving dynamics, upscale interior, and advanced safety features. It was named to Car and Driver’s “5 Best Trucks” list multiple times and received top safety ratings from the IIHS. Reviewers consistently highlighted its precise steering, strong V6 performance, and family‑friendly versatility, noting that it felt more agile than most luxury SUVs in its class.

WHERE THE 2ND GENERATION ACURA MDX WAS BUILT

Like its predecessor, the second-generation Acura MDX was assembled at Honda of Canada Manufacturing in Alliston, Ontario. This facility maintained Acura’s high build quality standards, producing every North American MDX for this generation.

ANALYZING THE 2007–2013 ACURA MDX SPECS

The 2007–2013 MDX delivered a more performance‑oriented driving experience than the first generation. The SH‑AWD system worked in harmony with a stiffer body structure and fully independent suspension to provide confident handling in all weather conditions. Steering was well‑weighted and responsive, while the ride remained composed over rough pavement.

LEARN MORE ABOUT THE 2ND ACURA MDX GENERATION

2007–2013 ACURA MDX ENGINE & DRIVETRAIN

EVOLUTION FROM 2ND TO 3RD ACURA MDX GENERATION (2014–2020)

The third-generation Acura MDX, produced from 2014 to 2020, marked a shift toward greater efficiency, advanced safety technology, and a more refined driving experience. Acura redesigned the MDX on a new, lighter unibody platform, improving fuel economy and ride comfort while maintaining the model’s hallmark versatility. The exterior adopted sleeker, more aerodynamic lines, highlighted by Acura’s Jewel Eye® LED headlights, while the interior gained higher-quality materials and a quieter cabin.

A major milestone for this generation was the introduction of a front-wheel-drive (FWD) option for the first time, broadening the MDX’s appeal to buyers in milder climates. Acura also expanded its suite of driver-assist features, with the AcuraWatch™ safety package becoming standard on most trims by the later years.

In 2017, the lineup welcomed the MDX Sport Hybrid, pairing a 3.0L V6 with a three-motor SH‑AWD hybrid system for improved performance and efficiency.

In its last year (2020), a limited-run trim was offered that combined the MDX persona with the hand-built quality that came with the Acura NSX supercar. More on the 300-unit MDX PMC edition below.

AWARDS & REVIEWS OF THE 3RD GENERATION ACURA MDX

The 3rd Gen MDX earned praise from outlets like U.S. News & World Report and Edmunds for its spacious interior, strong safety ratings, and well-balanced ride. The Sport Hybrid variant was singled out for delivering both better fuel economy and sharper handling. The MDX consistently earned IIHS Top Safety Pick+ honors when equipped with AcuraWatch™ and specific headlights.

WHERE THE 3RD GENERATION ACURA MDX WAS BUILT

As with previous generations, the third-generation MDX was assembled at Honda of Canada Manufacturing in Alliston, Ontario — however, there are some exceptions this time.

The Sport Hybrid models were produced in Japan at Honda’s Sayama plant.

The PMC Edition models were assembled by hand at Acura’s Performance Manufacturing Center in Ohio — alongside the Acura NSX hybrid supercar.

ANALYZING THE 2014–2020 ACURA MDX SPECS

The 2014–2020 Acura MDX prioritized a smoother, more efficient drive without sacrificing the performance and versatility that had defined the model since its debut. Built on a new, lighter unibody platform, this generation shed roughly 275 pounds compared to its predecessor, improving fuel economy, ride comfort, and agility. Revised suspension geometry and more rigid body construction enhanced both handling precision and cabin quietness, while the available Super Handling All‑Wheel Drive (SH‑AWD) system continued to deliver confident traction and cornering stability in all conditions.

Midway through the generation, Acura expanded the lineup with the MDX Sport Hybrid (2017–2020) — a performance‑oriented hybrid variant that paired a 3.0‑liter V6 with a three‑motor SH‑AWD hybrid system and a 7‑speed dual‑clutch transmission. The Sport Hybrid offered sharper acceleration, improved handling balance, and better fuel efficiency than its gasoline‑only counterparts.

The generation also saw the debut of the 2020 MDX PMC Edition, a 300‑unit, hand‑built limited‑production model assembled alongside the NSX supercar at Acura’s Performance Manufacturing Center in Ohio. Featuring exclusive paint, unique trim details, and serialized badging, the PMC Edition represented the pinnacle of craftsmanship and exclusivity for the third‑generation MDX.

Together, these advancements and special variants underscored Acura’s commitment to evolving the MDX into a more refined, technologically advanced, and performance‑capable luxury SUV, appealing to a broader range of buyers while maintaining its core identity.

For the 2020 model year, Acura introduced the MDX PMC Edition — a 300‑unit, limited‑production variant that represented the pinnacle of craftsmanship for the third generation. Hand‑assembled alongside the NSX supercar at Acura’s Performance Manufacturing Center in Marysville, Ohio, the PMC Edition combined the top‑tier MDX Advance Package with exclusive styling and build processes normally reserved for Acura’s halo models.

Finished in striking Valencia Red Pearl — a multi‑stage nano‑pigment paint previously exclusive to the NSX — the PMC Edition featured gloss‑black 20‑inch alloy wheels, black chrome exterior accents, body‑color grille surround, and gloss‑black roof. Inside, it offered premium Milano leather with Alcantara® inserts, contrast stitching, and serialized plaques denoting each vehicle’s production number.
Mechanically, it was unchanged from its “common” Advance Package sibling.

Priced at $60,725 (excluding destination), the 2020 MDX PMC Edition delivered a rare blend of exclusivity, performance, and luxury — making it, perhaps, the most collectible MDX models ever produced.

EVOLUTION FROM 3RD TO 4TH ACURA MDX GENERATION (2022–PRESENT)

The fourth-generation Acura MDX, debuting for the 2022 model year, marked the most comprehensive redesign in the model’s history. Built on an all‑new light‑truck platform with a longer wheelbase and wider track, the 4th Gen MDX was engineered to deliver sharper handling, greater ride comfort, and improved interior space. Styling drew heavily from the Acura Precision Concept, with a more sculpted body, a bolder Diamond Pentagon grille, and signature Jewel Eye® LED headlights paired with Chicane™ daytime running lights.

Inside, the MDX received a complete overhaul with higher‑grade materials, a more driver‑focused cockpit, and a new 12.3‑inch digital instrument cluster. The cabin also introduced Acura’s most advanced seating yet, with available 16‑way power front seats, a removable second‑row center seat, and expanded third‑row legroom.

A major performance milestone for this generation was the introduction of the MDX Type S — the first high‑performance variant in the model’s history — powered by a 3.0‑liter turbocharged V6 producing 355 horsepower and paired with a sport‑tuned SH‑AWD system and adaptive air suspension.

AWARDS & REVIEWS OF THE 4TH GENERATION ACURA MDX

The 4th Gen MDX has been praised by outlets such as Car and Driver and MotorTrend for its upscale interior, improved driving dynamics, and expanded technology suite. The Type S variant, in particular, earned recognition for delivering genuine performance credentials in a three‑row luxury SUV. The MDX has continued to earn IIHS Top Safety Pick+ ratings when equipped with specific headlights.

WHERE THE 4TH GENERATION ACURA MDX IS BUILT

The fourth-generation Acura MDX is assembled at the East Liberty Auto Plant in Ohio, United States, continuing Acura’s tradition of North American production while shifting from its previous Canadian manufacturing base.

ANALYZING THE 2022–PRESENT ACURA MDX SPECS

The 2022–Present MDX was designed to offer a more engaging and refined driving experience than any of its predecessors. The new platform’s double‑wishbone front suspension — a first for the MDX — and multi‑link rear suspension improved both cornering precision and ride compliance. The standard 3.5‑liter SOHC i‑VTEC V6 produces 290 horsepower and 267 lb‑ft of torque, paired with a 10‑speed automatic transmission and available SH‑AWD.

The MDX Type S elevated performance with its 355‑hp 3.0‑liter turbo V6, Brembo® front brakes, adaptive air suspension, and exclusive 21‑inch wheels.

The fourth‑generation MDX continues to offer three rows of seating for up to seven passengers, with a cabin designed to maximize comfort and flexibility. Passenger volume measures 139.1 cubic feet, providing generous space in all rows, while the longer wheelbase improves third‑row legroom compared to previous generations. Behind the third row, the MDX provides 16.3 cubic feet of cargo capacity — enough for groceries, sports gear, or small luggage. Folding the third row expands the available space to 39.1 cubic feet, and with both the second and third rows folded flat, total cargo capacity reaches 71.4 cubic feet, making it well‑suited for larger loads or weekend adventure gear.

THE EVOLUTION OF THE
ACURA MDX GENERATIONS

Acura MDX Generations

Across more than two decades, the Acura MDX has evolved through four distinct generations, each building on the strengths of its predecessor while introducing new innovations in performance, technology, and design. From its 2001 debut as one of the first unibody, three‑row luxury SUVs to today’s high‑tech, performance‑capable flagship, the MDX has consistently balanced premium comfort with everyday usability.

The first of the Acura MDX generations established the model as a category‑defining luxury crossover, offering refined road manners, a spacious interior, and Honda‑engineered reliability. The second generation sharpened its athletic edge with the debut of Super Handling All‑Wheel Drive (SH‑AWD) and a more powerful V6, earning praise from both critics and owners.

By the third generation, the MDX had embraced efficiency and advanced safety technology, introducing the Sport Hybrid for performance‑minded drivers seeking better fuel economy. Limited‑production models like the hand‑built 2020 PMC Edition added exclusivity and craftsmanship to the lineup.

The current iteration represents the most ambitious leap yet — across all Acura MDX generations. Built on an all‑new platform with double‑wishbone front suspension, a more luxurious interior, and the first‑ever MDX Type S performance model, it signals Acura’s renewed focus on driving excitement while maintaining family‑friendly versatility.

Looking ahead, future Acura MDX generations are likely to embrace electrification, advanced driver‑assist systems, and even greater integration of performance engineering from Acura’s motorsport and Type S programs. As the luxury SUV market continues to evolve, the MDX is well‑positioned to remain a leader — blending innovation, capability, and style in ways that appeal to both loyal owners and new buyers.

From its groundbreaking first generation to its cutting‑edge present, the story of the Acura MDX generations is one of continuous refinement, adaptability, and a commitment to delivering a premium driving experience that stands the test of time.
